Korean American flutist Sungwoo Steven Kim has performed across the United States, Europe, and his native Korea. During his residency in Berlin as a Konzertexamen fellow at ‘Hanns Eisler’ Hochschule für Musik, Kim was appointed Acting Principal Flutist with the Nürnberg Staatsphilharmonie for the 2011–12 season and served as Assistant Principal Flutist with the Staatsoper the following year.
Upon returning to the United States, Kim expanded performances in Broadway productions, including The Phantom of the Opera, Mary Poppins, Wicked, and Aladdin. His solo appearances include a debut at Carnegie Hall with the Interschool Orchestra of New York and ensembles such as the Nürnberg Staatsphilharmonie, New York Handel Festival Orchestra, Livingston Symphony Orchestra, William Paterson University Symphony, and Haffner Sinfonietta in Boston.
As a soloist, Kim was awarded top prizes in numerous national and international competitions, including First Prize at the New York Flute Club Young Artist Competition in 2006, the Bohuslav Martinů Prize at the 61st Prague Spring International Competition in 2007, and Third Prize at the 38th National Flute Association Young Artist Competition in 2010.
An avid educator, Kim has served on the faculties of Tufts University, Stonehill College, and the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College. As a certified Suzuki Flute Teacher, he deepened his expertise in flute pedagogy by studying with Toshio Takahashi, editor of the Suzuki Flute School. Kim hopes to nurture the next generation of musicians through innovative and inspiring teaching.
